THE GOLDEN GIRLS, Adams, Shields and Taylor

THE 2012 OLYMPIC GOLDEN GIRLS: By Brian Zelley

*At the end of the final bell for women's olympic boxing,
three boxers from Great Britain, Ireland and the United States
became the first three Golden Girls of Olympic boxing:
Nicola Adams, Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields.

The three boxers each have their own story, but at the
end of the Olympic road, they all stand tall as the first
three Golden Girls of Olympic boxing history.

NICOLA ADAMS:  Team Great Britain
*The last hurdle to reach the finals was an acid test in the
semi-finals against India's boxing legend Mary Kom, a multi-term
world champion.
*The BBC announced in the headlines:
"Olympic boxing: Nicola Adams secures gold medal bout"
but before the semi final there was a journey that began long
before Olympic boxing for women became a reality.

*Nicola's first major International tournament took place in 2007
at the European Championships, and after that she never looked back.

*Some of the background of Adams can be found on the  Wikipedia link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicola_Adams

KATIE TAYLOR: Team Ireland
*Katie has an extensive background in boxing that covers
numerous titles and achievements and was the top boxer in
women's lighweight boxing.

*Some of the background is found on Wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katie_Taylor
Her pre-competition activity at the 2012 London Olympics
included carrying the flag for team Ireland in the opening
ceremonies at the start of the Games.

CLARESSA SHIELDS: Team USA
*For many the first sign that Claressa would be a possible
Olympic boxer was after a victoria over Canada's Mary Spencer
in a tournament in early 2012.

*Some of the details of her journey is found on the Wikipedia link:

"The RING" magazines highlights Claressa Shields
In the pre-Olympic publicity, The RING magazine did
an article on the men's teams from the USA and Great Britian,
but they also covered a few of the women boxers from the USA
and one of those boxers was Claressa Shields of Flint, Michigan.

THE ANDREW SELBY BOXING JOURNEY:  by Brian Zelley

*I first noticed the journey of Andrew Selby from his performance
in 2010 at the Commonwealth Games.  In the past years, Andrew
has improved his performance to be a strong choice for Olympic
gold in the flyweight division.

*In 2010, Selby was competing for his home nation of Wales, but
in 2012 he and fellow Welsh boxer Freddie Evans are competing
for Team Great Britain.

For the preliminary rounds, Andrew received a bye based on his
high AIBA standing due to past performances.  In his first actual
bout Andrew won a convincing decision and moves forward into
the quarter finals.

*With his second win, Canadian welterweight boxer
CUSTIO CLAYTON will move into the quarter finals
to face Team Great Britain/s FREDDIE EVANS.

Like Custio, Evans won his second bout this Friday.

Both Clayton and Evans are worthy of a medal, but
only one of them will move into the medal round.

Brody Blair, Kenny Lally
and Custio Clayton)

Brody and Kenny, missed
selection for the Olympics
but will be talented and
experienced boxers to lead
Canadian boxing into the
future.   It is expected that
Custio and Freddie Evans
will consider pro boxing
after their 2012 Olympic
Journey ends in August.
