2012 OLYMPIC BOXING BUZZ

NEWS, VIEWS and the BOXING BUZZ:  By Brian Zelley
Introduction:
As we prepare for the opening bell
there are the various pre-Olympic
stories of some of the potential
boxers and other bits and pieces.

This section of the Road To The
London Olympics will try to
capture some of the buzz.

One of the hot topics is the
type of garb that the women
boxers would use "skirts or shorts",
but it appears the end result by the decision makers is
for flexibility in the decisions the competitors can make.

The Schedule:
Boxing is expected to run from July 28 to August 12
at the Excel Exhibition Centre in London.  Leading
the charge on July 28th. will be the bantamweights
and middleweights in men's boxing.

*Pre-Olympic buzz by "The Telegraph" mentions
some of the British boxers to look forward to are
Nicola  Adams, Khalid Yafai and Tom Stalker.
Others include Katie Taylor and Paddy Barnes of
Ireland and Mary Kom of India.

stories relating to London 2012

This is but one of many storiea about Savannah Marshall.
In Canada, the one with the largest amount of press is
potential Olympic boxer for Canada Mary Spencer.

The Canadian Men's A-Team:
*Each member of the A-Team
will attempt to break on through
the barrier that will lead to a spot
of the Canadian Olympic Team
for 2021 and a date in London
during July and August 2012/

*Each boxer has a variety of
skills and various levels of
experience from senior
members of the team to
the new faces that will
try to do what is very difficult.
Each boxer may have
only one more chance to make the Olympic team and
that should take place in Brazil in the coming months.

In the past we have seen multi-term Olympic boxers
from Canada such as Walter Henry to Michael Strange.

No amount of past performance will matter to the
A-Team of 2012, for them, there is only one narrow
door that must be entered and that will require
a combination of experience, timing and maybe
a little luck in the Brazil tournament.

THE IRISH BOXERS MARCH ON

IRISH EYES and SHAMROCKS:  by brian zelley

As of February 9th., 2012, three of the Irish boxers have
qualified for the 2012 London Olympics.  They include:

At the world championships, Nevin settled for a bronze medal
when he was edged out by England's Luke Campbell in a
count back after tied in the scoring.  Both Nevin and
Campbell will be at the Olympic Games in London so
tbere could be a possible rematch if they both have
winning ways in early competition.

Seven others won recent titles in Dublin and will be
training for the final qualifier in April.  The select
seven are:
PADDY BARNES, ready to earn another Olympic spot for Ireland

Paddy Barnes, Michael McDonagh, Ross Hickey,
Adam Nolan, Joe Ward, Tom McCarthy and Con Sheehan.

In AIBA ratings, many of the above listed boxers are ranked
in the top 20 including woman lightweight boxer KATIE TAYLOR.
