THE GOLDEN GIRLS, Adams, Shields and Taylor
THE 2012 OLYMPIC GOLDEN GIRLS: By Brian Zelley
*At the end of the final bell for women's olympic boxing,
three boxers from Great Britain, Ireland and the United States
became the first three Golden Girls of Olympic boxing:
Nicola Adams, Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields.
The three boxers each have their own story, but at the
end of the Olympic road, they all stand tall as the first
three Golden Girls of Olympic boxing history.
NICOLA ADAMS: Team Great Britain
*The last hurdle to reach the finals was an acid test in the
semi-finals against India's boxing legend Mary Kom, a multi-term
world champion.
*The BBC announced in the headlines:
"Olympic boxing: Nicola Adams secures gold medal bout"
but before the semi final there was a journey that began long
before Olympic boxing for women became a reality.
*Nicola's first major International tournament took place in 2007
at the European Championships, and after that she never looked back.
*Some of the background of Adams can be found on the Wikipedia link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicola_Adams
KATIE TAYLOR: Team Ireland
*Katie has an extensive background in boxing that covers
numerous titles and achievements and was the top boxer in
women's lighweight boxing.
*Some of the background is found on Wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katie_Taylor
Her pre-competition activity at the 2012 London Olympics
included carrying the flag for team Ireland in the opening
ceremonies at the start of the Games.
CLARESSA SHIELDS: Team USA
*For many the first sign that Claressa would be a possible
Olympic boxer was after a victoria over Canada's Mary Spencer
in a tournament in early 2012.
*Some of the details of her journey is found on the Wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claressa_Shields
"The RING" magazines highlights Claressa Shields
In the pre-Olympic publicity, The RING magazine did
an article on the men's teams from the USA and Great Britian,
but they also covered a few of the women boxers from the USA
and one of those boxers was Claressa Shields of Flint, Michigan.

*I first noticed the journey of Andrew Selby from his performance
in 2010 at the Commonwealth Games. In the past years, Andrew
has improved his performance to be a strong choice for Olympic
gold in the flyweight division.
*In 2010, Selby was competing for his home nation of Wales, but
in 2012 he and fellow Welsh boxer Freddie Evans are competing
for Team Great Britain.
For the preliminary rounds, Andrew received a bye based on his
high AIBA standing due to past performances. In his first actual
bout Andrew won a convincing decision and moves forward into
the quarter finals.

movement and the variety of his punches and combinations.

BOXINGS CHOSEN ONES for 2012
THE OLYMPIC GAMES, LONDON 2012: by Brian Zelley
*The AIBA (International amateur boxing association) is down to
the wire in selecting the last of the boxers from around the globe
who have earned or have lucked-in to a spot on the many
International Olympic Teams. Once the world women's
action in China hears the final bell, the complete team of
women boxers will be known and they will join the
male boxers that have competed in various tournaments
to narrow the field into those that we will call Olympic boxers.
*But, even those that have been selected must still be aware of
the "Buster Mathis Moment" of 1964. Buster earned a spot on the
team but was injured in training and was replaced by JOE FRAZIER.
And, the rest is history. Joe went on to win gold, and then become
a professional boxer with a group backing him. He course was well
charted and he went on to win the Heavyweight Championship
of The World. Buster also turned pro, but had no major backing,
no well charted course, and limited opportunity. But, the sport of
professional boxing and the general public quickly turn away from
the boxers that are on the outside of the in-crowd. But, that also
happens it real life not just the zany world of pro boxing.
THE WOMEN BOXERS in THREE DIVISIONS
*The women boxers will qualify in three weight division for London.
Two of the lightweights to secure spots in the Games will be
Ireland's Katie Taylor and Great Britain's Natasha Jonas.
*The four middleweights engaged in semi-final action will be
Savannah Marshall, Nadezhda Torlopova, Yelena Vystropova and Anna Laurel.
Laurel had earlier defeated Canada's Mary Spencer who has been named
as a potential Olympic medal winner for Canada.

Canadian boxers at the last gate
THE 2012 CANADIAN A-TEAM AND THE LAST GATE: By Brian Zelley
As our Canadian boxers prepare for the action, one of the boxers has been
highlighted in a story in "The Chronicle Herald" (see link), but there will be
other stories about the team and the individuals.
Fighters down to last shot for Olympics | The Chronicle Herald
Of the Cnadian boxers only the two Nova Scotia boxer
BRODY BLAIR and CUSTIO CLAYTON are menttioned.
But the story for them all of them is the same, they must win their
first bout to hope for a spot on the Olympic team. A loss in the
first bout will spell "End of Story", but win the first and there are
big possibilities.
The other Canadian boxers that are in the fight include
Kenny Lally of British Columbia, and Alex Rynn of Alberta.
AIBA follows the action on their web site:
http://www.aiba.org/
Third Session: Emilien Boucher 25 - 10 over Bayron Molina Figuero/
Third Srssion: Justin Hocko gets eliminated.
Fourth Session: Yves Ulysse over Leyton Bates 14 - 10
Jonathan Savard wil see action in session four.
As the action continued, one by one all but two were eliminated.
THE DOOR SWINGS OPEN
*As the event comes to a close, announcements were
quickly made that two of the men boxers had qualified
for the Olympic team and the names were Custio Claton
and the super-heavyweight SIMON KEAN.
THE SWINGING GATE FOR WOMEN'S BOXING:
*The swinging gate still swings for Canadian middleweight
MARY SPENCER, but due to a loss to Sweden, she will
need to sit tight for the wildcard selection.

2012 OLYMPIC BOXING BUZZ
NEWS, VIEWS and the BOXING BUZZ: By Brian Zelley
Introduction:
As we prepare for the opening bell
there are the various pre-Olympic
stories of some of the potential
boxers and other bits and pieces.
This section of the Road To The
London Olympics will try to
capture some of the buzz.
One of the hot topics is the
type of garb that the women
boxers would use "skirts or shorts",
but it appears the end result by the decision makers is
for flexibility in the decisions the competitors can make.
The Schedule:
Boxing is expected to run from July 28 to August 12
at the Excel Exhibition Centre in London. Leading
the charge on July 28th. will be the bantamweights
and middleweights in men's boxing.
*Pre-Olympic buzz by "The Telegraph" mentions
some of the British boxers to look forward to are
Nicola Adams, Khalid Yafai and Tom Stalker.
Others include Katie Taylor and Paddy Barnes of
Ireland and Mary Kom of India.
BUZZ from "The Guardian"
*February story featured boxer Savannah Marshall who
is looking to go from World silver medalist to Olympic gold.

stories relating to London 2012
More can be found at the
Sporting Life web site:

http://www.sportinglife.com/london2012/
This is but one of many storiea about Savannah Marshall.
In Canada, the one with the largest amount of press is
potential Olympic boxer for Canada Mary Spencer.
The Canadian Men's A-Team:
*Each member of the A-Team
will attempt to break on through
the barrier that will lead to a spot
of the Canadian Olympic Team
for 2021 and a date in London
during July and August 2012/
*Each boxer has a variety of
skills and various levels of
experience from senior
members of the team to
the new faces that will
try to do what is very difficult.
Each boxer may have
only one more chance to make the Olympic team and
that should take place in Brazil in the coming months.
In the past we have seen multi-term Olympic boxers
from Canada such as Walter Henry to Michael Strange.
No amount of past performance will matter to the
A-Team of 2012, for them, there is only one narrow
door that must be entered and that will require
a combination of experience, timing and maybe
a little luck in the Brazil tournament.

This is but one of many storiea about Savannah Marshall.
In Canada, the one with the largest amount of press is
potential Olympic boxer for Canada Mary Spencer.
The Canadian Men's A-Team:
*Each member of the A-Team
will attempt to break on through
the barrier that will lead to a spot
of the Canadian Olympic Team
for 2021 and a date in London
during July and August 2012/
*Each boxer has a variety of
skills and various levels of
experience from senior
members of the team to
the new faces that will
try to do what is very difficult.
Each boxer may have
only one more chance to make the Olympic team and
that should take place in Brazil in the coming months.
In the past we have seen multi-term Olympic boxers
from Canada such as Walter Henry to Michael Strange.
No amount of past performance will matter to the
A-Team of 2012, for them, there is only one narrow
door that must be entered and that will require
a combination of experience, timing and maybe
a little luck in the Brazil tournament.

THE IRISH BOXERS MARCH ON
IRISH EYES and SHAMROCKS: by brian zelley
As of February 9th., 2012, three of the Irish boxers have
qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. They include:
Michael Conlon, John Joe Nevin and Darren O'Neil.
At the world championships, Nevin settled for a bronze medal
when he was edged out by England's Luke Campbell in a
count back after tied in the scoring. Both Nevin and
Campbell will be at the Olympic Games in London so
tbere could be a possible rematch if they both have
winning ways in early competition.
Seven others won recent titles in Dublin and will be
training for the final qualifier in April. The select
seven are:
PADDY BARNES, ready to earn another Olympic spot for Ireland
Paddy Barnes, Michael McDonagh, Ross Hickey,
Adam Nolan, Joe Ward, Tom McCarthy and Con Sheehan.
In AIBA ratings, many of the above listed boxers are ranked
in the top 20 including woman lightweight boxer KATIE TAYLOR.

THE FINAL BELL, the party is over
2012 BOXING CANADA SENIOR NATIONALS: by brian zelley
Well the party is over for another year, and for the most part many of
the champions retained there titles, but there were some interesting
battles along the way with some surprises and a few upsets.
For boxers such as Jonathan Quinit, Kenny Lally and Alex Rynn,
they brought their usual fight face to ringside, and then there were
some new kids on the block such as bantamweight RODOLFO VELASQUEZ.
And, true to form the following boxers made it through the tournament
to be the last man standing in the weight division including
Yves Ulysse, Custio Clayton, Brody Blair, Jonathan Savard and
the real senior SAMIR EL MAIS.
Then there was MARY SPENCER who continued to be the top
woman boxer in Canada.
Some of the boxers that just fell short of the title still performed well
in many of the bouts with wins such as BC light-heavyweight
Thomas Speirs.
For the champions of 2012 this is not the end of their 2012
journey, some or all of them will attempt to win an Olympic
spot on the Canadian Olympic team with soon to be action
and activity in South America. It will be the last change to
give all and to get beyond the ordinary to reach-up and
reach out to catch the hard to get spots on the Olympic team.

THE BOXING CANADA ROAD IS LONG AND WINDING
THE BOXING ROAD IS LONG AND WINDING: By Brian Zelley
Most of those boxers that step into the ring to compete in the Nationals
will not be on the victory stand at the end of the show. The following
covers the travels of two of those boxers from Boxing Ontario.
GuelphMercury - Guelph boxers’ medal hopes end in Cape Breton
The story of heavyweight Paul Rasmussen and light-heavy
Fabricio Portillio is not much different from hundreds of other
boxers that have entered a National tournament. Many try
but only one in each division will see gold dangling around
their neck. Paul dropped a decision to Team-A's
SAMIR EL MAIS who used his experience to edge Rasmussen,
with a little help from the judges and the referee.
Looking at any Provincial team, there are always those stories
of disappointment, but in reality any that manage to participate
should consider themselves lucky to make the trip.
Over the decades of Boxing Canada from 1969 onward, there
have been hundreds of boxers, coaches and officials who have
been overlooked or have just missed the boat for a volume of
reasons including sickness or injury. On the other hand there
have been some that went, but did not have the tools to compete
in an effective manner, but due to whatever circumstances they
were picked to experience the golden opportunity. So anyone
who did get the opportunity to compete once or twice they
should have no regrets or complaints.
Take the team from British Columbia, how many should have
gone due to their excellence and how many went as just another
warm body does not matter. Each one went with that opportunity
to be the best that they can be at the time and gain new experiences.
When all is said and done, only about two of the team boxers will
make the finals, but for the others their participation is appreciated.
BC's two standouts prior to the finals include flyweight KENNY LALLY
and light-heavyweight THOMAS SPEIRS. Both train in Prince George
one of the all-time hot spots for amateur boxing and some history of
some quality pro boxers.

One of the potential young warriors from the Uptown Boxing Club
looking for action is MARK SMITHER. And, how many remember
him as a young boxer several years back in the Ontario Winter Games
with victories over boxers from Napper's Gym and HUF Boxing.
Another boxer with potential is Winnipeg's BRAD KATONA who
has had some of his bouts in the USA

THE LIGHT FLYS and FLYWEIGHT
JONATHAN QUINIT and KENNY LALLY lead the charge:
For Western Canadian boxing BC's Kenny Lally and
Manitoba's Jonathan Quinit are looking to hold of a host
of challengers from other Provinces.
In the light-flyweight division one of the contenders with
high hopes will be Brody Pigeon from Saskatchewan, but
also looking for gold will be Emilien Boucher of Quebec, and
Noram LaChance of Ontario.
For KENNY LALLY, there is a Quinit in the picture but it
will be Bradley Quinit that will try to take gold from BC and
deposit it in the Manitoba boxing treasure chest. The BC
- Manitoba connection has a long history with some names
from the past being Eddie Haddad and Billy Pinkus just to
name two. But, aside from the Manitoba challenge. Lally
will have five potential other boxers ready, willing and able
to win the gold for Quebec, Ontario or Alberta in the form
of the dual threat from Quebec, Samuel Robichon and Francois Pratte.
Then there will be Ontario's pair M. Dhaliwal and John Charlton.
But, Alberta boxers are always willing to give BC boxers a go.
Seeking gold for Alberta will be Roger Redoble.

THE BANTAMWEIGHTS - 2012 NATIONALS
JOEY AND HIS CHALLENGERS: By Brian Zelley
Over the last several years JOEY LAVIOLETTE has been riding the crest
of the wave of the ocean of Canadian bantameights and like all champions
no annual tournament is a guarantee of victory of holding the title.
Based on preliminary data, there will be at least eight fighters from
Alberta to Prince Edward Island ready to borrow the title from
Joey and avoid any double losses in box-off competition.
From the west leading a charge for Team Alberta will be Eric Taylor
and from PEI it will be Matt Harris. But, by the weight of numbers,
Team Ontario will lead the charge with four potential hot challengers
including: Justin Hocko, David Palacios, Rodolpho Velasquez and
Jermain Badchkam. But Team Quebec who couldn't get the numbers
together when it counted for future Canada Games activity can never
be counted out for future ring activity once the opening bell rings.
Two potential warriors from Quebec carry the name Gauthier for Gold.
